Coastal Barn Kitchen Renovation

by Lux Interiors

Lux Interiors is a leading design and build firm in Perth, specialising in kitchen, bathroom, and full home renovations.

Their recent Coastal Barn renovation in North Beach, Perth, is no exception and was a finalist in a number of categories in the 2021 KBDi Designer Awards.

Kerrie Richardson (CBD Au), has more than 10 years experience designing kitchens and bathrooms and was the creative designer behind this project. With her perfectionist eye for great design and current trends, she has received numerous design nominations and national awards for her work.

We wanted to know more about the incredible project and where Kerrie drew her inspiration from, so we sat down with her to find out more about this exceptional project.

Tell us a little bit about the project and what the brief was from the client

Our client requested a coastal barn home to enjoy and for their children to grow up in.

The kitchen was a large part of this renovation where the clients wanted a space that truly was the heart of the home, where the family would spend most of their time, to cook, eat, entertain, work, play and relax.

They requested; better utilisation of the space, extending the size of the kitchen to fit the room, a large island bench, more bench space, a coastal barn style and a light and bright space with elements of brass.

The existing kitchen was small with a little island bench. It lacked bench space around the cooktop and did not utilise the room to its full potential.

Even though there was lots of under bench storage, the drawer width was very narrow.

The existing corner display unit wasn’t used and became wasted space. The walk-in pantry was poorly laid out with open shelf storage and the fridge could only be opened 90 degrees due to the tall cabinets getting in the way.

Where did you find inspiration for the project?

I constantly take in inspiration every day, whether it’s on my way to a meeting and taking in building architecture, or a new tile sample that’s come in with strange colours and shapes that just seem to work.

I take photos, sketch, or keep samples for future projects when I need it. That way, when a new project comes in, I usually grab from my inspiration library (aka folder on my desktop or showroom).

When it comes to the start of a project, I take inspiration from the client’s brief, the location of the project (i.e., if it’s close to the beach then we may sway for more of a coastal theme), and architectural style of the home.

This is where the Coastal Barn theme was created, by taking the client’s love for light, brass, touches of pink, wanting it to feel warm and homely, then marrying that with the coastal location of the home and the architecture of the home.

And finally, I get inspired by the challenges of renovation projects. Because there are limitations in place, every project is different and you need to work within the existing structure, location of services and the client’s budget. I found it extremely rewarding when I find a solution that meets all requirements (and can look good).

Why did you choose Castella architectural hardware for the project?

Castella is the first hardware I look at for each project. They have the biggest variety of styles and finishes.

Why did you choose our Terrace range for the project?

I chose the Terrace range as it really complimented the stove handle shape, and the shape is soft and elegant.

What is your favourite element in the overall renovation?

The overall calming feeling the space has created. It’s one of the most relaxing spaces we have created.

How did you feel at the end of the project?

Extremely grateful and blessed. Our clients are some of the most beautiful people and it’s an honour to be part of creating their forever home for their family.

Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us Kerrie.

We adore the wonderfully inviting, light and bright coastal barn kitchen you have created.

We especially love the materials used from the porcelain marble look benchtop, the brass hardware and dark timber through to the floating overhead shelves, charging stations and the feature oven by Falcon.

We feel honoured to see our Terrace handles in brushed brass adorning the V-groove panelling and can see why this exceptional kitchen was a finalist in several categories in the 2021 KBDi Designer Awards including:

  • Kitchens Plus WA
  • Small Bathrooms WA
  • Design Space (Laundries)
