When interior designer Amelia Head of Head Interior Design was commissioned to create a kitchen and pantry for a bustling family of six, the brief was clear: blend high functionality with a classic contemporary aesthetic.
Working with a neutral, monochromatic palette, she crafted a design filled with subtle sophistication, emphasizing smooth, curved forms.
But behind the elegance lay hidden complexities, from integrating three ovens to creating a spacious island that encourages family gatherings.
The Challenge: Functional Design for a Family Hub
“The clients wanted a space that would suit their busy lifestyle but still offer a welcoming atmosphere,” Amelia explained. Tasked with including three ovens, a large induction cooktop, integrated appliances, and custom waste management solutions, she faced a unique challenge in merging utility with aesthetic flow. A pantry with a concealed third oven was also a key element, allowing seamless transition between the kitchen and pantry without sacrificing the minimalist look.
One small but powerful detail? The choice of Arabescato marble, with its striking veining that effortlessly ties the white and black cabinetry together. Amelia mentioned that this design element “anchors the kitchen’s color scheme,” creating an understated elegance throughout the space.
The Finer Details: Castella Ledge Pulls and Subtle Sophistication
Amelia’s approach to selecting smaller elements, like hardware, was all about balance. She noted, “The thin shaker door profile brings in a classic detail with a contemporary twist.” In line with this refined aesthetic, she chose Castella’s Ledge pulls, subtle yet impactful handles that complement the thin shaker profile without overpowering it. The hardware choice played a crucial role in allowing the cabinetry to shine while adding a functional elegance that blends seamlessly into the design.
With an eye for timelessness, Amelia emphasizes that these “smaller details play an essential role in creating a space that feels timeless.” The Castella Ledge pulls stand out not just for their functionality but for their minimalist appeal, ensuring that the kitchen will remain a stylish centerpiece in the home for years to come.
Innovation Through Constraints: A Gathering Space for All
The clients’ desire for soft forms inspired the kitchen’s most distinctive feature—an oval island bench that promotes conversation and gathering. Amelia explains that keeping the island free of a sink was essential to preserving its inviting nature. “The oval shape provided a soft form and encouraged people to gather and entertain,” she noted. This idea was further enhanced by an aged brass kicker and footrest wrapping around the island, adding a unique touch reminiscent of a restaurant or bar.
Designing for Longevity
When it comes to designing a kitchen that will stand the test of time, Amelia firmly believes in careful product selection. “Clients need to know their kitchen is going to last the lifetime of their home,” she shared. By choosing high-quality elements, such as Castella’s Ledge pulls, Amelia ensured that the kitchen’s hardware would not only meet daily functional demands but also maintain its elegance over time.
A Personal Touch: A Designer’s Pride in Her Work
Reflecting on the completed project, Amelia shared her pride in the island bench, where classic elements meet modern elegance. The combination of Arabescato marble, black-stained timber battens, and the aged brass footrest strikes “a balance of classic details with a modern twist.” This centerpiece embodies the essence of timeless design, blending luxury with functionality in a way that feels both current and enduring.
In this kitchen, every detail has a purpose, from the sleek Castella Ledge pulls to the thoughtful integration of appliances. The design offers a glimpse into Amelia Head’s passion for crafting spaces that bring families together, creating timeless beauty in the everyday functionality of the home.
